How many complex numbers z satisfy the equation z² + |z| = 0?
D. 3: Put z = x + iy: the imaginary part gives 2xy = 0 and the real part gives x² − y² + √(x² + y²) = 0. If y = 0, then x² + |x| = 0 forces x = 0; if x = 0, then |y| = y² gives y = 0, 1 or −1. So z = 0, i, −i: three solutions. Forgetting z = 0 gives 2.
In a simple pendulum experiment, g = 4π²L/T². The length is measured as 100.0 ± 0.1 cm, and the time for 20 oscillations is 40.0 ± 0.2 s. What is the percentage uncertainty in g?
C. 1.1%: %L = 0.1/100 × 100 = 0.1%. %T = 0.2/40 × 100 = 0.5%, and the same percentage holds for one oscillation. %g = %L + 2(%T) = 0.1 + 1.0 = 1.1%. Forgetting the power of 2 on T gives 0.6%, and subtracting the uncertainties gives 0.9%.
The pH of a 0.01 M HCl solution is:
